Environmental engineers need to be good in chemistry because pollutants are chemicals too, and to fight pollution, you should know the properties of chemicals.

Chemical engineers find ways to make process industries work more efficiently and minimise their environmental impact by using less energy and producing less waste. Environmental engineers protect, restore and create engineered and natural systems that are socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.

I would say chemical engineering because it is a fundamental engineering course which means that you can easily upgrade from chemical engineering to environmental engineering with little and at times with no extra training since environmental engineering is often a course unit in chemical engineering courses.

Engineers use the principles of biology and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental challenges, including waste water, air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues.

Environmental chemists should have a solid background in chemistry, including organic and biochemistry. (A minimum of a bachelor's degree is typically required.) Environmental engineering is a growing field The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the job outlook for this field is as fast as average from 2021 to 2031. As climate change continues to be a concern, the need for environmental engineers will likely continue to increase.
