Take immediate action to remove the employee from any safety-sensitive work and begin gathering evidence of the incident. If applicable state laws and your employer policy allows, send the employee for a drug or alcohol test.

Alcohol in the saliva creates a column of vivid reddish-purple color. The user reads the device at the upper limit of the color using the scale, exactly like reading a thermometer. If no alcohol is present no color develops.

A color change of green or blue indicates the presence of alcohol and a positive result. Results obtained after more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds (2.5 minutes) may be erroneous and should not be used.

Section 8205 - Reasonable Suspicion Testing (a) An employee may be tested when there is a reasonable suspicion that the employee may have engaged in drug, alcohol or substance use or appears by observable subjective factors to be impaired.

Read the alcohol concentration from the point on the scale where the purple bar stops. If bubbles appear in the device, read the alcohol concentration from the highest point on the scale where the purple bar stops. The test is invalid if the QA SpotTM is not purple after 5 minutes.

Allow two (2) minutes for the Q.E.D. ® test to develop. The QA Spot™must be dark purple to indicate a valid test.

After 24 hours, alcohol is typically sufficiently metabolized and is no longer detectable in the saliva. This makes saliva alcohol testing a highly accurate way to test for very recent alcohol use.

Saliva tests for alcohol screening can measure blood alcohol concentration levels of 0.02% and higher, up to 0.3%.
