Bobcats are protected furbearers in New Mexico with an established season for hunting and trapping from November 1 to March 15. New Mexico has provisions for landowners to control bobcats and other furbearers that are damaging property.

Coyotes have no protections in any part of their range. In New Mexico, people can kill a coyote without a hunting license. Neither New Mexico nor Arizona requires hunters to learn the differences between the Mexican wolf and the coyote.

Hunting any other furbearer with the aid of artificial light or after legal shooting hours is unlawful. It is unlawful to shine spotlights or other artificial lights into areas where big-game species or livestock may be present, while in possession of any sporting arm, except as permitted by rule for raccoon.

A nocturnal wild cat, the bobcat is characterized by its reddish, spotted fur and short, “bobbed” tail, from which it receives its name. About twice the size of the average house cat, bobcats weigh between 11 and 30 pounds. The bobcat is often confused with the Canada lynx.

The Game and Fish Department of New Mexico has designated coyotes as non-protected furbearers. This means coyotes are not protected by state law as a furbearer. Furthermore, they are also classified as nongame animals. Therefore, coyote hunting in New Mexico has neither any closed season nor bag limits.

Coyotes are color blind by nature and because of this, the best color light for coyote hunting is red. They have a hard time seeing green as well, but red is a better color because it is a higher wavelength and gives you some "buffer" from the cut off of what wavelength light their eyes are able to see.

Scan With Your Light to Find Coyotes By scanning back and forth quickly with a powerful light where you expect to see coyotes coming to your call, you are more likely to see an oncoming coyote's eyeshine. Don't look for an entire coyote at first, but identify eyes reflecting from your hunting light.

Thankfully, bobcats have survived and today are protected by New Mexico state law. Although bobcats are not considered furbearers, they may be trapped with a license in winter months.
