If an organization wants to introduce mentoring across their organization, they may do so with the goal of: Reducing employee turnover. Increasing engagement among employees. Planning for leadership succession.

They're Respectful: A good mentor is kind and admires you as a whole person who may be different in small or large ways. They're a Good Listener: An effective college mentor uses active listening skills to help them pay attention to your needs and provide appropriate feedback.

The purpose of mentoring programs is to help connect knowledge seekers (mentees) with knowledge bearers (mentors). These mentee-led relationships provide mentees the opportunity to connect in meaningful ways with someone whose past experience can help them navigate careers and life.

Mentors provide guidance, advice, feedback, and support to the mentee, serving variously as role model, teacher, counselor, advisor, sponsor, advocate, and ally, depending on the specific goals and objectives negotiated with the mentee.

The goal of a mentorship program is to accelerate the personal and professional development of mentees. This is achieved by providing mentees with guidance, advice and feedback from mentors with more experience than themselves.

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs ( GEAR UP) is a discretionary grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education.

Mentoring programs provide students with the opportunity to gain and refine important skills — such as problem-solving, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking — that can benefit them as they plan for college or enter the workforce.

All eligible mentors must complete twelve (12) hours of State-required NJ-L2L mentor training. Training sessions meet throughout the year as three (3) four hour evening trainings, or two (2) six hour summer training sessions. Mentor training dates are posted on .njl2l.org.
