Freshwater mussels have been collected by commercial musselers for the cultured pearl industry. A cultured pearl is formed by taking a round core from the shell of some of our larger species of freshwater mussels and inserting that core into a clam. Freshwater pearls have also been collected by musselers.

Currently individuals may harvest up to 25 pounds of whole mussels (or 12 pounds of shell) daily for personal use and consumption; a fishing license and freshwater fishing stamp are required. Mussel harvesting predates recorded history.

Cook mussels until steaming hot. Don't eat shellfish raw or lightly cooked as this won't get rid of bacteria such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus. One good way to know mussels are fully cooked is that their shells pop open when boiled or steamed, and the mussel inside is firm to the touch.

One obvious difference between freshwater and marine mussels is that freshwater mussels live in freshwater streams, rivers, ponds and lakes while marine mussels live in salt water oceans and bays.

These mussels would taste like detritus and algae—basically the muck at the bottom of a pond. After all, that is what they eat all day! Mussels use a siphon effect with their gills to take in oxygen and filter out food from the water column.

Although most species are edible, freshwater mussels are not as tasty as their saltwater relatives. In addition, since they are long-lived filter feeders, pollutants can easily settle and build up inside them, making them distasteful and potentially unhealthy for human consumption.

Native Americans used mussels as a food source. However, it is not recommend that people eat freshwater mussels these days due to pollution concerns. (Since mussels are long-lived filter feeders, they have the unfortunate ability to concentrate pollutants in their bodies which can harm humans.)

In contrast, one of the largest species of freshwater bivalves is the swan mussel, in the family Unionidae; it can grow to a length of 20 cm, and usually lives in lakes or slow rivers. Freshwater pearl mussels are economically important as a source of freshwater pearls and mother of pearl.
