Issue: One of the disclosures available to life insurance consumers is the life insurance illustration. An illustration is a presentation or depiction provided to prospective or new policy owners that shows how the policy should perform under specific circumstances set out in the illustration.

The actual legal guarantees associated with the policy are contained in the policy's contract. Insurance agents provide a policy illustration to applicants who are considering purchasing a life or disability insurance policy. The illustration discusses the policy's features and benefits.

A policy illustration shows how the policy's value is expected to change over time and what assumptions those values are based on. A disability policy illustration will also show the waiting period before benefits become payable and describe the conditions that must be met for the policy to payout.

While insurance illustrations certify how the guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements of the policy will perform from the effective date until maturity, the insurance quoting tool educates the insurance agent about different policies to simplify the sales process.

The benefit illustration basically shows how returns on the money invested will be earned/calculated. The projected investment rate of return shown in the benefit illustration can be guaranteed as well as non-guaranteed. Therefore, you should read it carefully.

Term life insurance policies do not require in-force illustrations. Term life policies have a death benefit for a specified number of years. And on most term life policies, the premium you pay is guaranteed not to change for the term period.

(f) The contestability period as defined in Section 10350.2 for long-term care insurance shall be two years.
