You have the legal right to claim compensation from the airline if your checked-in luggage is delayed, lost or damaged. You only have the right to claim for a problem with cabin baggage if it's the airline's fault.

Baggage loss insurance covers baggage that is lost, damaged or stolen during your trip. But not everything in your bags might fall under the insurance coverage.

To get reimbursed for any expenses caused by the baggage delay you need to submit your claim online by completing a form, no later than 21 days after your baggage have been delivered to you. You must include your Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and receipts for all the expenses.

The maximum baggage liability for flights covered by the Montreal Convention is currently 1,288 Special Drawing Rights (approximately $1,700.00 US) per passenger. This is the most that airlines must pay a passenger for a lost, damaged, or delayed bag.

Most airlines have a dedicated baggage desk within the baggage claims area. You may receive a Property Irregularity Report (also known as PIR.) You will also need to put in a written claim to the airline within seven days. Having a PIR is no guarantee that the airline will accept your claim.

If there is no desk around, get in touch with the airline whose aircraft you were on.
