What happens during your GP appointment. Your doctor will look at your mole or abnormal area of skin. They might: measure it with a ruler or against a marker scale.

A visual check of your skin only finds moles that may be cancer. It can't tell you for sure that you have it. The only way to diagnose the condition is with a test called a biopsy. If your doctor thinks a mole is a problem, they will give you a shot of numbing medicine, then scrape off as much of the mole as possible.

A diagnosis of melanoma will usually begin with an examination of your skin. Some GPs take digital photographs of a suspected tumour so they can email them to a specialist for assessment. As melanoma is a relatively rare condition, many GPs will only see a case every few years.

If a mole appears to be suspicious in any way, you will not be treated and will be referred back to your own GP for thorough evaluation and treatment if necessary. Moles are generally removed for cosmetic reasons, because they are large, unsightly or positioned on a visible area (e.g the face).

Nevus is a general term that may refer to any congenital lesion of various cell types or tissue types. Generally, however, nevus (or mole) used without a modifier refers to a pigmented lesion composed of nevus or melanocytic cells.

A skin specialist (dermatologist) or plastic surgeon will examine the mole and the rest of your skin. They may remove the mole and send it for testing (biopsy) to check whether it's cancerous. A biopsy is usually done using local anaesthetic to numb the area around the mole, so you will not feel any pain.

The 7-point checklist (7PCL) was developed in Glasgow in the 1980s as guidance to help non-dermatologists (GPs and patients) detect features indicating possible melanoma, with the advice that each feature should score 1 and lesions with scores of ≥3 should be referred for specialist opinion (Original 7PCL).

Harmless moles are not usually treated on the NHS. You can pay a private clinic to remove a mole, but it may be expensive. A GP can give you advice about where to get treatment.
