The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) is a valid and reliable self-rating scale of social anxiety, which includes one item (number 14) with an explicit heteronormative assumption about the respondent´s sexual orientation. This heteronormative phrasing may confuse, insult or alienate sexual minority respondents.

Scoring and interpretation Possible scores range from 0 to 80. Higher scores are associated with higher social anxiety. The author of the measure, Peters (2000), defined the cut-off score as 36. In other words, a score of 36 or higher suggests a possible diagnosis for social anxiety.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) is a self-report scale that measures distress when meeting and talking with others that is widely used in clinical settings and among social anxiety researchers.

The SPS and SPS-6 scales measure fears about being observed and performance fears, for instance, eating in front of others, or giving a speech. Thus, together the two scales cover all feared situations with regard to social situations and, hence they are a good tool to screen social anxiety and SAD.

As noted previously, the SPS was developed by Mattick and Clark (1998) to measure anticipatory anxiety associated with being observed by others, anxiety when actually being observed, and anxiety felt when engaging in activities in the presence of others (e.g., eating, writing).

The scales have good psychometric properties as attested by satisfactory reliability indices: internal consistency, determined by Cronbach's α, ranged from 0.88 to 0.93 for the SIAS and 0.89 to 0.94 for the SPS [3, 5].

The results of the test are scored between 30 and 95 (or higher). Mild social anxiety scores as 30–50. Moderate social anxiety scores as 50–65. Marked social anxiety scores as 65–80.

The Social Phobia Scale, SPS and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, SIAS (Mattick & Clarke (1988). Both contain 20 items each. The SPS assesses fear of being observed during daily activities, whilst the SIAS assesses more general fears of social interaction.

Fill Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS-6) And Social Phobia Scale (SPS-6)

SCORING: SIAS-6: Items 1-6 ; SPS-6: Items 7-12. Individuals with scores ≥ 12 on the SIAS-6 were defined as having social anxiety, and those with scores ≥ 9 on the SPS-6 were defined as having social phobia. Together, the SIAS-6 and the SPS-6 appear to be an efficient method of measuring symptoms of social phobia and provide a brief screening tool.
