Over 90% of colleges allow undergraduates to take a failed class again to improve their grade. Depending on the school, the new grade may replace the F on your transcript — or both grades may appear, with the new grade replacing the F in your GPA calculation.

Courses can be repeated for Grade Replacement as long as you earned a C-, D+, D, D-, or F/WF as your final grade. However, there are some exclusions outlined in UNCG's policy.

Grade replacement is the circumstance under which the new grade replaces the former grade in terms of the calculation of GPA. Grade replacement shall not be applicable to courses for which the original grade was a result of a finding of academic dishonesty.

Undergraduate students may replace up to two (2) courses (maximum of 8 hours) for grade replacement. Both grades will be reflected on transcript.

Undergraduate students can opt to retake a course and replace the original grade earned to improve their GPA. During their undergraduate careers, students may request to replace the grades for a total of four courses, up to a maximum of 16 credit hours, in which they have earned a grade of C-, D+, D, D- or F/WF.

Meet With an Academic Advisor At most schools, for example, students with a failing grade can retake the same class to replace the grade on their transcript. Academic advisors can also talk through your options to protect your GPA or potentially drop the class.

Grade replacement may be a way that students try to raise their GPA if they have experienced one/some low grades in high school. It is up to the local school corporation if they allow grade replacement and if so, how the course is reflected on the student transcript and how GPA is subsequently calculated.
