In Mathematics, logarithms are the other way of writing the exponents. A logarithm of a number with a base is equal to another number. A logarithm is just the opposite function of exponentiation. For example, if 102 = 100 then log10 100 = 2.

Mathematically, Logarithms are expressed as, m is the Logarithm of n to the base b if bm = n, which can also be written as m = logb n. For example, 43 = 64; hence 3 is the Logarithm of 64 to base 4, or 3 = log464. Similarly, we know 103 = 1000, then 3 = log101000.

Log is the inverse operation to exponentiation, just as division is the inverse of multiplication and vice versa. In simple cases the logarithm counts factors in multiplication. For example, the base 10 logarithm of 1000 is 3, as 10 to the power 3 is 1000 (1000 = 10 × 10 × 10 = 103); 10 is used as a factor three times.

The most common types of logarithms are common logarithms, where the base is 10, binary logarithms, where the base is 2, and natural logarithms, where the base is e ≈ 2.71828.

The logarithmic function for x = 2y is written as y = log2 x or f(x) = log2 x. The number 2 is still called the base. In general, y = logb x is read, “y equals log to the base b of x,” or more simply, “y equals log base b of x.” As with exponential functions, b > 0 and b ≠ 1.

Logarithmic functions are the inverses of exponential functions. The inverse of the exponential function y = ax is x = ay. The logarithmic function y = logax is defined to be equivalent to the exponential equation x = ay.
