Definition. Cross-cultural validation refers to whether measures (in most cases psychological constructs) that were originally generated in a single culture are applicable, meaningful, and thus equivalent in another culture (Matsumoto, 2003).

The theory of uniqueness (C. R. Snyder and H. L. Fromkin, 1980) predicts that the perception of extreme similarity (SM) of self to others leads an individual to seek a behavioral strategy that gives him/her a greater sense of uniqueness.

The NFU measure was designed to assess individuals' desire to be different from others. An individual with a high need for uniqueness emphasizes a sense of independence, anti-conformity, inventiveness, achievement, and self-esteem.

The Need for Uniqueness scale Snyder and Fromkin (1980) presumed individual differences in the NfU. To assess an individual's degree of NfU, they developed a scale (Snyder & Fromkin, 1977).

Consumers' need for uniqueness is defined as an individual's pursuit of differentness relative to others that is achieved through the acquisition, utilization, and disposition of consumer goods for the purpose of developing and enhancing one's personal and social identity.

Need for uniqueness represents the need for people to feel different and distinguish themselves from others. Two major scales exist that measure this need: the Need for Uniqueness scale (NfU; Snyder & Fromkin, 1977 ) and the Self-Attributed Need for Uniqueness scale (SANU; Lynn & Harris, 1997b ).

A defining force in the shaping of human identity is a person's need to feel special and different from others. Psychologists term this motivation Need for Uniqueness (NfU).
