There are two main categories of credit unions—state chartered and federally chartered. While both provide the same general benefits characteristic of many credit unions, there's one key difference between the two. Federal credit unions are regulated and supervised by the National Credit Union Association (NCUA).

For a complete directory of federally insured credit unions, visit the NCUA's agency website at ncua.gov. The standard share insurance amount is $250,000 per share owner, per insured credit union, for each account ownership category.

What are the basic NCUA coverage limits?* Revocable trust accounts: Each member-owner is insured up to $250,000 for each eligible beneficiary named or identified in the revocable trust, subject to limitations and requirements.

Just like banks, credit unions are federally insured; however, credit unions are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Instead, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is the federal insurer of credit unions, making them just as safe as traditional banks.

Credit unions need a charter — a license to operate — from either the National Credit Union Administration or a state credit union regulator. The federal government and state governments have different chartering rules and requirements.

The main difference is whether the permit to do business as a credit union was granted by the state government or the federal government. Whenever a new credit union is established, the organizers apply for either a state or national (federal) credit union charter.

Federally Chartered Credit Unions To determine whether a federally chartered credit union is backed by the U.S. government, look for the official National Credit Union Association insurance sign on its website or branch location or the word “federal” in the name.

As set forth in the Act and Chartering Manual, there are three types of federal credit union charters: single common bond (one occupational or associational group), multiple common bond (multiple groups), and community.
