The Illinois State Police, Firearms Services Bureau, Investigative Support Unit may be contacted at 217-782-3700, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., to answer questions or confirm receipt of a submission.

(a) (1) No person may acquire or possess any firearm, stun gun, or taser within this State without having in his or her possession a Firearm Owner's Identification Card previously issued in his or her name by the Illinois State Police under the provisions of this Act.

In the U.S. state of Illinois, residents must possess a FOID card, or Firearm Owners Identification card, in order to legally possess or purchase firearms or ammunition in the state. The applicable law has been in effect since 1968, but has been subject to several subsequent amendments.

It is a Class a Misdemeanor, punishable by up to 364 days in the county jail,to possess, or acquire, a firearm, stun gun, or taser within the state of Illinois without having in a person's possession a valid FOID card when the person's Firearm Owner's Identification Card is expired but the person is not otherwise ...

To be eligible for a FOID card, a person must be 21 years of age or have a parent or guardian sponsor that is eligible for a FOID card. An applicant must not be prohibited from possessing firearms in ance with state or federal law. This requires the applicant is/has: Not been convicted of a felony.
