A Welding Procedure Specification, or WPS, is a document that serves as a guide for the effective creation of a weld that meets all applicable code requirements and production standards. Think of a WPS as a recipe for welders.

A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is the formal written document describing welding procedures, which provides direction to the welder or welding operators for making sound and quality production welds as per the code requirements.

The American Welding Society (AWS) authors over 350 standards for welding practices and procedures for construction and aerospace covering structural steel, sheet steel and aluminum. This includes the D1. 1 Structural Welding Code - Steel, one of the most referenced codes in the world.

A Welding Procedure Specification, or WPS, is a formal written document describing standard welding procedures. Like a recipe for welders, these procedures provide clear direction for your welders to make quality products that are up to code and industry standards.

A welding procedure specification (WPS) is a written document providing direction to the welder (or welding operator). It contains all the necessary parameters viz. joints, base metals, filler metals, positions, preheat, PWHT, gas etc. (including ranges, if any) under which the welding process must be performed.

What is in a Welding Procedure Specification? Welding Procedure Specifications are important no matter how experienced your welders are. They act as a safeguard to prevent welding defects, limit company liability and maintain the highest possible standards.

A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is the record of the actual weld test parameters used.It is the founding document as far as procedures are concerned and is used to produce welding procedure specification sheets (WPS) for production welds.

Procedure specifications are used to define prototyped procedures that are specified after the main source section, otherwise known as subprocedures. The prototype for the subprocedure may be defined in the main source section of the module containing the subprocedure definition.

A WPS and PQR are required documents in the fabrication process when a weld must comply with a certain standard. In simple terms, a WPS is a set of welding instructions and the PQR is a checklist to ensure those instructions were satisfactorily met. The PQR document is created first and is needed to create the WPS.

Abstract. ISO 15614-2:2005 specifies how a preliminary welding procedure specification is qualified by welding procedure tests. It applies to the arc welding of wrought and cast aluminium and its alloys. It does not apply to finishing welding of aluminium castings, which is dealt with by ISO 15614-4.
