Step 6 of Alcoholics Anonymous involves one becoming willing to ask a higher power for help in their change. Oftentimes, this step can only be taken after one has completed the other steps and has performed an honest evaluation of their past behaviors.

Steps by the Big Book Freely downloadable Word doc and PDF files are available for the following sections for Workbook for the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

AA's Step 6: Were entirely ready to have God remove all our defects of character. AA's Step 7: Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings. But Steps Six and Seven are only briefly discussed in the book Alcoholics Anonymous—commonly called the Big Book.

Sixth Step Prayer Dear God, I am ready for Your help in removing from me the defects of character which I now realize are obstacles to my recovery. Help me to continue being honest with myself and guide me toward spiritual and mental health.

These 12 steps are outlined in Chapter 5, “How It Works,” of the Big Book. The 12 Steps helped each of the co-founders of AA in their own recovery from alcohol misuse and have continued to help countless others battle their alcohol addictions.

There is little written in the Big Book about these two Steps, actually just one brief paragraph on each, found on page 76. Some people believe there should be written “work” for Steps 6 and 7. Others believe that we simply request that God remove our character defects.

(View Step 1) We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable. (View Step 2) Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. (View Step 3) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Step 7 asks people to humble themselves and acknowledge that they are not perfect. This is accomplished by asking a higher power to help remove these shortcomings. It is important to remember that for some people, this may involve asking God, as they understand Him, for help.
