Get Opt Out Form

Is opting out illegal? No. State law says the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must give tests to all students. But state law does not say every student must take those tests and it does not provide for any penalties to students who refuse, or their parents.

Opting out is exercising your parental right to have your child not participate in certain types of instruction. Opting out is a formal process that typically requires written notification or completion of an opt-out form distributed by your school.

If your student does not pass an SOL test on the first attempt, he or she will receive additional support and instruction on the areas where they struggled on the first SOL test attempt. The student will then have a second chance to demonstrate their knowledge with an expedited retake.

With an opt-out approach, a notification is sent home to all students, and the child only returns the signed form if their parent/guardian does not want them to participate in the curriculum. If the form is not returned, the child remains in the class.

OPT OUTS are the funds that the district uses to run and operate its schools. It provides money above the basic state allocation to be used for day-to-day expenses such as staff salaries, supplies, heating expenses, transportation and co-curricular programs.

Are You Required to Submit a FAFSA? Filling out FAFSA is not required to apply or attend college. However, if a student and their family doesn't fill out FAFSA, they won't be able to access any federal funding, grants, Direct Student loans or the Parent Plus loan.

Virginia regulations do not include what is sometimes referred to as an "opt out policy" for state assessments. However, state law allows parents and guardians to refuse SOL, VAAP, and/or VGA testing for their children.
