Pregnant Service members may request separation due to pregnancy after obtaining a certification of pregnancy from a physician assigned to a military treatment facility. The Navy does not generally consider pregnancy on active duty or reserve an impediment for continued service.

The Navy on Thursday announced details on the military's new policy providing 12 weeks of parental leave to parents after birth, adoption or long-term foster care placement. Before the change, new moms got six weeks of parental leave and six weeks of convalescent leave.

All Pregnant Service Members: Should not be assigned to units that are deploying from the 20th week of pregnancy through 12 months following delivery and release from their medical providers. Under no circumstance shall a pregnant Service member remain onboard past the 20th week of pregnancy without a waiver.

As of Dec. 27, 2022, the service member has 15 days of convalescent leave and 42 days of primary caregiver leave remaining. In transitioning to the new policy, the service member will remain on convalescent leave until Jan. 11, 2023, then transition to the expanded parental leave, receiving 12 weeks of parental leave.

Soldiers can work shifts and continue to perform military duty until delivery. Soldiers wilh complicated pregnancies may have their duty modified by their healthcare provider. At 20 weeks of pregnancy: Exempt from parade rest or standing at attention for longer than 15 minutes.

PARENTAL LEAVE POLICY UPDATE – In most cases, Sailors who experience qualifying events, like birth, adoption, or long-term foster care placement will be now be authorized 12 weeks of parental leave to care for their newborn, adopted or placed child or children. See DTM 23-001 and NAVADMIN 008/23.
