In 1933, British researchers Wilson Smith, C.H. Andrewes and P.P. Laidlaw at London's National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) made a breakthrough when they isolated and identified the influenza virus.

We know now that influenza, or flu, is caused by a virus – but for many years it was thought to be caused by a bacterial infection. In 1892, German scientist Richard Pfeiffer isolated a small bacterium from the noses of patients with flu, naming it 'bacillus influenzae'.

One of the first recorded cases was on March 11, 1918, at Fort Riley in Kansas. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions created a fertile breeding ground for the virus. Within one week, 522 men had been admitted to the camp hospital suffering from the same severe influenza.

Records show that the flu has been around for at least 1,500 years. The history of influenza begins with Hippocrates (5th century BC) who first reported that an influenza-like illness spread from Northern Greece to the islands south and elsewhere.

Symptoms of the flu start rapidly, and people can go from fine in the morning to bed ridden in the evening. The flu is worst between the day 1 and day 4 mark, after which time people begin to show signs of improvement. Once at day 7 people are usually fine and happy to go on with their lives.

The authors also found that the wider virus family that includes influenza probably originated hundreds of millions of years ago in primordial aquatic animals that evolved well before the first fish.

Most people who get the flu will recover within a few days to about two weeks, but there are risks of complications, including pneumonia.

For most healthy people, the flu is an uncomfortable but short-term illness that resolves itself as the immune system fights it off. Symptoms usually appear from one to four days after exposure to the virus, and they last five to seven days.

Stages of the Flu Flu Day 0. This is when some people are actually contagious, yet feel fine. ... Days 1-3. Suddenly, you may feel ill. ... Day 4. You may notice a dip in fever and less muscle achiness. ... Day 5. Things should be looking up. ... Day 6 and Beyond. At this point, your symptoms should be leveling off.

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.
