Like the US, Canadian provinces and territories create and regulate workers' compensation legislation at a local level for workers' compensation boards (WCBs). The WCBs, which provide insurance for workplace injuries and illnesses, operate independently and are funded by employers — not the government.

Canadian employers pay for workers' compensation Anyone running a business with employees in Canada must offer workers' compensation insurance to their workforce. You must first register your company with the WCB (Workers' Compensation Insurance Board) and then pay workers' compensation insurance premiums.

On your 65th birthday, under normal circumstances*, the wage loss benefit you receive from the WCB will end. WCB Medical Aid Benefits continue past the age of 65.

Some states limit the length of time an injured worker can receive temporary benefits. This range can be three to seven years. That said, there is not usually a limit on permanent disability benefits. However, some states do stop weekly benefits when employees reach the age of 65.

Workers' Compensation Boards Coverage is generally mandatory, but certain industries are exempt, including dentistry, banking, and insurance. However, unlike in the US, Canadian industries that are required to purchase workers' compensation insurance can do so only from a WCB.

If the injury is severe and prevents you from ever doing any work again, workers' compensation will cover you until age 65 for ongoing wage loss and permanent impairment benefits. And depending on your age, they may put a percentage of your benefits away to be paid to you monthly upon turning age 65.
