There are over 600 muscles in the human body, and memorizing them all can be really tough. However, it will be a lot more manageable if you break the task into chunks. In addition, learning the root words that make up the muscle names can give you valuable clues to remembering where each muscle is located.

The prime mover, sometimes called the agonist, is the muscle that provides the primary force driving the action. An antagonist muscle is in opposition to a prime mover in that it provides some resistance and/or reverses a given movement.

A muscle with the opposite action of the prime mover is called an antagonist.

Skeletal muscles can only pull; they can never push. They come in pairs that act in opposi- tion to each other. One muscle (the agonist) pulls the bone in one direction; the opposite mus- cle (the antagonist) pulls the bone back into position where it relaxes and lengthens.

Contractions of agonist and antagonist muscle groups generate movement around a limb joint, and during any movement, the muscle antagonists change their lengths in opposite directions.

The agonist is the muscle that initiates a movement and the antagonist is the muscle that opposes that movement. An example of this is the bicep which flexes the arm as the agonist, and the tricep which straightens it back out as the antagonist.

A muscle with the opposite action of the prime mover is called an antagonist. Antagonists play two important roles in muscle function: They maintain body or limb position, such as holding the arm out or standing erect.
