The word partitive is used to show that only a part of a whole or a piece of something is referred to. An uncountable noun can be made countable by using a partitive. For example, cheese is uncountable. Cheese cannot be counted as one cheese or two cheeses.

Entity partitives can contain either singular countable nouns or mass nouns (and sometimes even plural countable nouns), combining with determiners such as 'much', or those with a fractional meaning, like 'half'. Other determiners can be combined with either type of partitive, including 'some', 'many', and 'all'.

PARTITIVES are multiword expressions containing a count noun + of (e.g., “loaf of,” “piece of,” “cup of,” “liter of”, etc.) that indicate a unit by which a following head noun can be counted.

A partitive noun is a noun that is used to describe a part or quantity of something. Partitive nouns are used with another noun to tell you how much of that noun there is. "Boxes" in "three boxes of cereal" is a partitive noun because it describes a specific quantity of cereal.

Below are more examples of partitive nouns. a glass of milk. a spoonful of sugar. some of the cake. a lot of feathers. a bottle of perfume. a piece of paper.

In contrast, partitives used to quantify food are more restricted. Portions of baked goods such as cake, pie, pizza, and bread are measured by slices, and only bread is quantified by the partitive count noun loaf. Certain types of vegetables (e.g., cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce) are quantified by head."

Countable Nouns dog, cat, animal, man, person. bottle, box, litre. coin, note, dollar. cup, plate, fork. table, chair, suitcase, bag.
