The standard specifies requirements for the materials, design, manufacture, testing, inspection certification and dispatch of pressure vessels for pressures up to 21 MPa and temperatures within the limits for the various materials and components.

Codes for pressure vessels can be found in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME BPV code). While there is no formal definition, generally any closed vessel over 150 mm in diameter and that will experience a pressure difference of greater than 0.5 bar can be classified as pressure vessels.

A pressure vessel is a closed container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially higher or lower than the ambient pressure. Examples include glassware, autoclaves, compressed gas cylinders, compressors (including refrigeration), vacuum chambers and custom designed laboratory vessels.

A pressure vessel is any structure such as pipes, barrels, bottles or any walled container that is capable of holding pressure. Examples of pressure vessels include pipes that contain pressure in an aqueduct system.

The design code for pressure vessels, AS1210 requires every pressure vessel to be protected by a relief device that prevents the vessel pressure from rising more than 110% of the vessel's design pressure.

This pumping device is the only part of the unit that is properly called an "air compressor." The compressor delivers high-pressure air to the third and final part of the mechanical assembly, the air storage tank; commonly called a pressure vessel.

Hazard levels Pressure vessels are rated from A through to E, with A being the most hazardous and E the least hazardous.
