Your letter writers must submit their letter on your behalf. The AMCAS Letter Service enables letter writers to send all letters to AMCAS directly rather than individually to each school. AMCAS will accept letters of evaluation and distribute them to participating medical schools electronically.

Procedures for obtaining committee letters vary widely among institutions, so you will need to make sure you understand your institution's process. You may need to attend information sessions, submit self-reflective essays, participate in interviews, and meet GPA and/or course requirements.

In general, recommendation letters should be submitted on letterhead if possible. That's because recommenders are presumably writing (and giving their opinions about you) in their professional capacities, either as your professors or as your supervisors.

Letters of recommendation must be signed, dated, and on official letterhead. Unless explicitly asked by the student, do not recommend a student for a specific school or program (e.g., ?applicant to Penn Medical School?).

It differs from a regular letter of recommendation which is written by a single writer of your choosing. As I mentioned above, there are no longer any medical schools that require a pre-health committee letter, only schools that prefer it but do accept individual letters as well (see table).

As a reference letter is a formal application document, it's important you can sign it in a professional and official manner. Type your name in print and consider using e-signature software to include your signature.

How Many Letters Will You Need? In most cases, schools request a minimum of three recommendations: two from science professors and one from a non-science professor or an extracurricular supervisor.

In addition to professors, you may choose to ask a research PI or mentor, a physician you shadowed or worked closely with, or a volunteer activity supervisor. You could also ask a TA or an employer for a letter of recommendation if they know you better than your other options.
