What is the difference between a column break and a page break? A column break forces text to the top of the next column; a page break forces text to the top of the next page.

Use page breaks to control where a page ends and where a new page begins. Place the cursor where you want to start a new page. Select Insert > Page Break.

These two types are further subdivided into several different kinds of page and section breaks. The page breaks partition only the body text of the document, whereas the section breaks partition both the body text of the document, as well as partition page margins, headers and footers, page numbers, and the like.

To insert a page break in an OpenOffice Writer document, follow the steps below. Click Insert on the file menu. Click Manual break. Select Page Break and click OK.

Sections are your main topics, while pages may go into more detail on those topics. Think of your module like a binder. Sections are the tabs, while pages are the pieces of paper behind the tabs with all the information on them.

\pagebreak tries to make the page the same height as other pages if it's possible (by stretching intervals between paragraphs etc) and \newpage just fills the page with empty space. \newpage forces a new page at the point at which it occurs.

Page breaks are used to end a page without filling it with text. To make sure the title page of your thesis/dissertation is separate from the signature page, for example, insert a page break after the graduation date on the title page.

Section breaks enable you to split a document into several sections, enabling you to apply different formatting and layouts to each section. For instance, having two sections in a document enables one section to have portrait orientation and the other to have landscape orientation.
