A typical legal numbering: arabic numbering for each level, followed by a dot. It is not necessary to type in the previous levels' numbers. For example, at level 3, we only specify level 3's number.

The Chicago Manual of Style, The Bluebook and the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation all suggest spelling out numbers from zero to ninety-nine. The Oregon Appellate Courts Style Manual says to spell out numbers from zero to nine (as does the Bulletin), and Chicago recognizes this alternative as popular in some publications.

If fractional amounts appear along with whole numbers, the form used should be the same for all amounts ? '$28.00', '$16.52' and '$0.75', not '$28', '$16.52' and '75p' ? and the cent or pence abbreviation should not be used along with the dollar or pound symbol ('$16.52¢' is never right).

Words. You can write the amount in words by writing the number of whole dollars first, followed by the word 'dollars'. Instead of the decimal point, you will write the word 'and,' followed by the number of cents, and the word 'cents'. If you want, you can write out the numbers using words too.

The general rule is that all numbers ten and below should be spelled out and numbers 11 and above should be put in numerals. However, there are certain exceptions to this: If numbers recur through the text or are being used for calculations, then numerals should be used.

It probably comes from the days before the printing press when contracts were handwritten. Then it would have been easy for a scoundrel to alter a number. Spelling out the word too made that harder. Perhaps that is why some people still hand write checks that way.

For example, if you're writing a check for $1,500, write out ?one thousand, five hundred and 00/100.? When writing out the dollar amount in words, write the amount as far to the left as you can. Then draw a line through any remaining space to the right of the amount listed.
