Without this service, you have no way of proving who accepted a package or that it has arrived, so this service is useful for items that are important and that you want to reduce the risks of losing. If you are sending low cost, low value items, it is probably not worth paying for the Signature Confirmation service.

For most items requiring a signature only one attempt is made to the door. After the first attempt usually within 5 days you will receive a second notice with your regular mail, 5 days later a third and final notice with a date the item will be returned to sender.

UPS and USPS only require signatures, these days, if the sender purchases a signature confirmation service or the item cannot be purchased by a minor: alcohol and medicine being the most common.

Non-accountable mail can be delivered to an address without a signature, or when the recipient is not present if the item is endorsed "CARRIER-LEAVE IF NO RESPONSE." Non-accountable mail includes: Perishable Items. USPS Tracking® items.

The Postal Service (USPS) will make 1 or 2 attempts to deliver, based on the carrier's knowledge. After the attempts, the package will be held for 15 days from the intial delivery attempt and then returned to sender.

A note will be left to let the recipient know that delivery was attempted, and that USPS will redeliver at a later date. The sender will also get an online notification that the delivery failed and a redelivery will be attempted.
