Here in New Jersey, yes you do keep the same number through renewals. I've had the same number since I got my driver's license on my 17th birthday and I'm approaching 52 now. What do I do if I am still waiting on my drivers license renewal after mailing it in and my current license expired?

Effective December 1, 2018, Alabama will begin issuing an 8-digit driver license number. Alabama will continue to support the existing 7-digit numbers and also the new 8-digit numbers. Alabama currently issues 8-digit non-driver identification cards. Both numbers below will be valid DL formats as of December 1, 2018.

First two character are state code. Second two numbers is RTO code which issued the DL. After that next four numbers is year in which DL was issued. Last seven digits are your DL number it is alloted in series.

DMV ID Number. This is the 9 digit "ID" number printed in the upper portion of your driver license, learner permit or non driver ID (DMV photo document).

The driving license number begins with first letter of your last name followed by 14 digits. The permit validation number is usually handwritten number made of 5 digits. Both of these number can be found on your NJ permit.

The first two characters should be upper-case alphabets that represent the state code. The next two characters should be digits that represent the RTO code. The next four characters should be digits that represent the license issued in a year. The next seven characters should be any digits from 0-9.

New Jersey driver's license numbers consist of one letter and 14 numbers formatted as L####-#####-#####.

Make sure you are not covering any part of the ID (e.g. with your finger). Make sure the photo of your face on the ID is visible. Make sure the image is not blurry. If your ID continues to fail, try another ID type if available.
