Starting on , US trades will ?settle? (complete the exchange of dollars for stock) in one day rather than two. Experts say US banks, brokers and investors will have to review all of their post-trade technologies and procedures to ensure they are ready for the new pace of stock trading.

For most stock trades, settlement occurs two business days after the day the order executes, or T+2 (trade date plus two days). For example, if you were to execute an order on Monday, it would typically settle on Wednesday. For some products, such as mutual funds, settlement occurs on a different timeline.

On February 15, 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission (the "Commission") adopted a rule amendment to shorten the standard settlement cycle for most routine securities trades from two business days after the trade date to one business day after the trade date (or from "T+2" to "T+1" in common parlance).

The two-day settlement date applies to most security transactions, including stocks, bonds, municipal securities, mutual funds traded through a brokerage firm, and limited partnerships that trade on an exchange. Government securities and stock options settle on the next business day following the trade.

The settlement time for money market mutual funds could be same day or up to T+1, depending on whether it is a sweep account (a cash feature of your brokerage account) or a traditional money market fund. They can settle as early as the next business day after the trade is executed.

In the case of subscriptions, purchases, or redemption, the cut-off time is before or at PM.

Mutual fund shares are highly liquid. They can be bought or sold (redeemed) on any day when the markets are open.

What's the difference between trade date and settlement date? The trade date is when an investor initiates a buy or sell order, and the settlement date is when ownership of the underlying security is actually transferred. That generally happens two business days after the trade date (also called T+2).
