Often times when negotiations drag on for more than a year and employees do not perceive they are getting value from their representation, they file a petition with the NLRB to remove the union before a labor contract is finalized. This makes the 465 day average time for a first agreement even more interesting.

Collective bargaining is the process in which working people, through their unions, negotiate contracts with their employers to determine their terms of employment, including pay, benefits, hours, leave, job health and safety policies, ways to balance work and family, and more.

What happens if the result of the vote is Yes (to ratify the contract)? If a majority of those voting accept the tentative agreement, the new contract would take effect upon the conclusion of the ratification vote. Wage increases would go into effect on July 1.

When negotiating the union contract, there are some general points to keep in mind. Decide what is reasonable for the organization because the union is likely to ask for more than your organization can provide, i.e., reasonable wages and benefits increases, maximum paid leave, seniority rights, etc.

Items up for discussion during negotiations are anything you want to address in your workplace, including, but not limited to: Wages. Healthcare. Pensions and Retirement.

The tactics available to the union include striking, picketing, and boycotting. When they go on strike, workers walk away from their jobs and refuse to return until the issue at hand has been resolved.

You have a short period after signing the tenancy agreement during which you may cancel without liability. This period is known as the cooling off period or Initial Cancellation Period and commences once the terms and conditions have been accepted. You then have 14 days in which to cancel.
