The 16 year old driving curfew in Michigan is 10 pm to 5 am for 16-year-old teen drivers with a Level 2 graduated licensing status. The only exceptions are when driving with a parent, legal guardian or driver over 21, driving for work (including to and from) or to and from an authorized activity.

Teens may not drive between the hours of 11 pm and 5 am during the first year. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Teens can drive between those hours for work. The employer must also provide the teen with a written note.

A 16 year old driver can have passengers in Michigan under certain circumstances. The Level 2 restrictions allow only 1 passenger under 21 unless: (1) the passengers are family; (2) a parent or guardian is in the car; (3) the teenager is working or going to or from work or an authorized activity.

The following restrictions are in effect the first nine months and can be extended until you are 18: You can drive alone, but you are limited to only one passenger other than your immediate family or a qualified adult. No driving between midnight to 5 a.m., unless traveling between home and school or work.

Hewitt said, violation of the 16-year-old driving curfew is a civil infraction, punishable by the curfew restrictions being expanded and/or extended. A violation could also result in the restrictions on passengers being expanded and/or extended.
