Private bookmarks are completely private. The author can how many bookmarks they have, and the number on their stats page will be higher than the number on their fic. The difference is however many private bookmarks are on the fic. They'll only see the names on the public bookmarks however.

The Show Notification action creates a system notification. Show Notification runs instantly and continues to the next action (unlike the Show Alert action, which pauses the shortcut).

Bookmarks put the fic on your profile so you can find it again. You can also add you own tags and comments to bookmarks. It's like your personal bookshelf. Subscriptions sign you up for email updates to a fic.

You can find the list of people who've made public bookmarks for a specific work via that work's blurb, which can be accessed from the work's page, a user's profile page, a fandom's page, a collection's page, or in search results. For example, a work's blurb might say "Bookmarks: 9".

An AO3 bookmark is a record of a work you want to remember, find more easily, or record a note about. Bookmarks created on the Archive can also serve as recommendations to other users. Basically, Bookmarks are similar to Wattpad's Library or Reading List.

It is important to note, that creators do not receive any direct notification when a work is bookmarked (AO3 ?Archive FAQ > Bookmarks?).
