Once a tagged fish is caught, the choice is usually left to the angler whether they want to keep the fish or release it. Many of these tagging programs have guidelines on whether to remove the tag or leave it on and continue tracking the fish.

?Conventional? spaghetti tags are a piece of tough plastic that you attach to the fish. They have an ID code on them which you register online after you release the fish. Once someone else catches it, they report the tag and you find out where your fish ended up.

In order to manage California's valuable fisheries resources, biologists need to gather information about fish abundance, growth rates, age, migrations, strain identification, and stocking success. One way to collect data is by attaching tags to planted and wild fish.

One of the most frequently used methods is marking and tagging. Briefly, this consists of catching a number of the fish being studied, marking each with a tag or other means of identification, and re- leasing them.

The tagging data is used by scientists to study the lives and habits of these fish species. The migratory habits of the tagged fish are observed by measuring the distance and direction travelled between tagging and recapture, and this can be linked with environmental factors. Growth patterns are also monitored.
