Tag Name License For Free

You can apply for the plates online through the MVA's website or in person at any of the MVA's full service branch offices. You also can mail your application to the MVA's Specialty Tag Unit in the Glen Burnie office, or go to an MVA licensed tag and title service where they will assist you in applying.

Current Law: All vehicles are required to display two registration plates, unless they are in one of five vehicle classes.

For People Who Do Not Yet Own Bay Plates: Bay plates are $20. $10 goes through the Chesapeake Bay Trust for environment-related grants, and $10 is kept to administer the program by the MVA.

With the standard $10 version of the plate, you do not get to choose specific characters. If you want to have this option, you will need a personalized version, which costs an additional $30 annually. When requesting a personalized plate, the license plate application asks for your top two preferences.

A variety of South Carolina plates can be personalized. To apply for a personalized plate, complete the Application for Personalized License Plate (SCDMV Form MV-96). You must pay $30 plus the registration fee.

Maryland will give you a month sticker for FREE, but if you put the year sticker in the wrong place, it will cost you $10 for a replacement sticker. A new registration card will cost you $5. Improper placement started way back in the 1980's when Maryland did not have month stickers and the plates all renewed in March.
