Helm uses a packaging format called charts. A chart is a collection of files that describe a related set of Kubernetes resources. A single chart might be used to deploy something simple, like a memcached pod, or something complex, like a full web app stack with HTTP servers, databases, caches, and so on.

Chart Dependencies The name field is the name of the chart you want. The version field is the version of the chart you want. The repository field is the full URL to the chart repository. Note that you must also use helm repo add to add that repo locally. You might use the name of the repo instead of URL.

Anatomy of a Helm Chart A helm chart tree contains a values. yaml file, template files that consume the values, a chart. yaml file with name and version information, and a NOTES. txt file which prints on the command line when you start your application.

ReleaseName is the name you assigned to this installation instance. Chart is the name and location of the chart: oc-cn-helm-chart for BRM cloud native services, oc-cn-ece-helm-chart for ECE cloud native services, or oc-cn-init-db-helm-chart for initializing the BRM database schema.

As mentioned earlier, a Helm chart consists of metadata that is used to help describe what the application is, define constraints on the minimum required Kubernetes and/or Helm version and manage the version of your chart. All of this metadata lives in the Chart. yaml file.
