AP Stylebook Numbers Rules Spell out numbers nine and below; use numerals for numbers above 10. Avoid starting sentences with numbers; most can be spelled out, but years must appear as numerals, so try to write the sentence a different way.

AP style says to use words for numbers one through nine and numerals for 10 and up. For millions, billions and trillions, however, AP uses a mix of numerals and words: 2 million, 8 billion, 14 trillion.

Generally speaking, we follow the guidelines outlined in the AP Stylebook. In body copy, we prefer to spell out numbers one through nine, and use numerals for numbers 10 and greater. This is true of ordinal numbers, as well. Spell out first to ninth, and capture 10th or greater with numerals.

The period and the comma always go within the quotation marks. The dash, semicolon, question mark and exclamation point go within the quotation marks when they apply to the quoted matter only. They go outside when they apply to the whole sentence.

In U.S. currency, write out cents for amounts less than a dollar (3 cents and 50 cents for example) and use the dollar symbol and decimals for anything larger ($1.01). An exception: If the reference to money is casual, you may spell out dollar (The man on the corner asked for a dollar).

Spell out all numerals that begin a sentence, except a calendar year. Unless another specific rule applies, spell out whole numbers below 10 and use figures for 10 and above. In a series, apply the appropriate guidelines.

The general rule regarding the use of numbers is to use words to express numbers in one or two words (i.e., one, five, thirty-six, ninety-nine, one hundred, etc.) and represent other numbers by numerals (MLA, 98).
