If you live in Massachusetts, go to the school superintendent for the town where you live or go to school. Your superintendent may have designated someone in your school to issue work permits. If you do not live in Massachusetts, go to the superintendent of schools for the town where you will be working.

An Employment Certificate, commonly called a Work Permit, is required for all minors who have not reached their 16th birthday. Minors may obtain Work Permits from: A school Issuing Officer (including most private schools) The county school superintendent's office.

You should bring with you proof of your age, such as your Birth Certificate, Passport, or Immigration Record. The Superintendent, or his or her authorized agent, will then issue you an Employment Permit. Bring the signed work permit back to your employer, who must keep it until you leave the job.

Children who are 14 and 15 years of age may only work between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the school year, and may not work during school hours. In the summer (July 1 through Labor Day), employees in this age group may work between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

In Massachusetts, children under 14 may not work, with certain very limited exceptions. All workers ages 14-18 are required to obtain a Youth Employment Permit prior to employment.
