A new car's warranty starts on the date it is purchased. To determine how much longer the vehicle will be covered, you can check a car warranty by VIN through a dealership's service department or a vehicle history report.

Extended car warranties typically exclude for the following items: Routine maintenance: oil changes, tire rotations, etc. Wear and tear: brakes, brake pads, clutches, windshield wipers, headlight bulbs, etc. Appearance and exterior damage: scratches and dings.

The warranty dates will only be updated based on the original sale date when purchased new. If you have the original proof of purchase from the original sale it will be accepted.

For example, many warranties for common household items only cover the product for up to one year from the date of purchase. Generally, they are covered only if the product has problems due to defective parts or workmanship. As a result of these limited manufacturer warranties, many vendors offer extended warranties.
