Split Break Settlement For Free

After the 8 hour split, your 14 hour is PAUSED (so the 8 hours don't count towards your 14) - so you still have only the 2 hours you used PRIOR TO the 8 hour break. Once you take the 2nd TWO HOUR break - BOTH CLOCKS (11 & 14) reset back to zero, from the END OF THE 8 HOUR BREAK.

First you need to log the longest part of the split in sleeper berth, i.e the 7 or the 8 hours, and after the 2 or 3 hour break you only get that time back that you used before you took the 2 or 3 hour break after you take the 7 or 8 hour break.

The 7/3 sleeper berth split: In a 7/3 split, you start with 7 consecutive hours off in sleeper berth status and then complete your required break by taking your next 3 hours later in the day. Similar to the 2/8 split, you can take a 3/7 sleeper berth as well.

Ing to the new HOS rules, the 8/2 split states that a driver may drive for up to six hours, and then take a two-hour off-duty break before driving another five hours.

With regard to the 8/2 or 7/3 split, you can use the 2 or 3 hour off-duty time to "extend" your 14-hour clock, but the 2 or 3 hour off-duty time MUST be paired with a corresponding 8 or 7 hour sleeper berth. BUT that 8 or 7 hour sleeper berth does NOT need to be part of an actual 8/2 or 7/3 split.

TEAM DRIVING FLEXIBILITY They can do 7 and 3 instead. Up to 3 hours in the passenger seat of a moving commercial motor vehicle, immediately before or after 7-consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, can be logged as off-duty time for a 10-consecutive hour break.

For those not familiar, the split sleeper berth rule allows commercial drivers to split their mandatory 10-hour rest breaks into two non-consecutive segments and still reset their substantive time limits. The shorter of the two segments must be at least two hours long.
