Before you start a home renovation project, whether it's a new kitchen, an updated family room or a new sunroom, check to see if you need a building permit. Generally, a building permit is required for ANY construction, installation, repair, replacement, or alteration costing more than $20,000.

The Residential Access Permit is required for any modification or new installation of a residential entrance flowing onto a County road, with or without the need to remove and replace concrete curb and gutter.

A mechanical permit is required when: Ductwork is being installed in a dwelling that does not have ductwork, or additional ductwork not covered by other permits. Mechanical work was not included with the scope of work for an existing building permit. Additional mechanical work is being completed.

When is a permit not required? Nonstructural work where the cost is less than $15,000 in any single-family residence unless the work involves new or altered plumbing systems, mechanical systems or electrical systems. Farm buildings outside the jurisdiction of any municipality.
