Documents do not need to contain initials, although the option is always there if you want to guarantee some extra security for those important agreements. As someone who's creating a contract, you may consider initialling a few pages or all of them.

The initials should be handwritten in ink; it can be in either print or cursive, or in the form of the first alphabet of your name, a half version of the signature or a quick and short scribble, or just a slight stroke of the hand with the writing instrument.

Signature serves to provide legality to an official document. Meanwhile, initials are usually used as a marker of a document that has been checked or verified by the person concerned. In a company, usually superiors will not want to sign a document if it does not have initials in it.

There is no hard and fast rule on whether to initial on the agreement or not. It all depends on the circumstances, the complexity of the matter and the exchanges and processes involved in finalising the final version of the agreement. In some transactions, to initial every page may be unnecessary and a waste of time.

Although not a legal requirement, it is common practice for the parties to initial each page of the agreement. By doing so, this indicates each party's agreement to the provisions on each page and makes it harder (but not impossible) for the contract to be tampered with by replacing the pages.

Initialling the pages is not a legal requirement. Initialling is done by contractors as it can have a number of benefits which are discussed below. Namely, it can help with ensuring the documents legal validity is intact. Signing each page (or selected pages) prevents anyone from replacing those pages with other terms.

Initial can be formed from the first letter of one's name. Initialing a document does not equate to signing it. Compared to signatures, Initials are more flexible and not legally binding. Signatures are official and legally binding in an agreement or decision.
