Creating subsections in your table of contents. To create a subheading in your table of contents, create the subheading in your document. Highlight it and click Heading 2 at the top of your screen. It will be added to your table of contents, nested underneath the appropriate chapter heading.

Identify: Go to the paragraph/s which are displaying in the TOC. The incorrect style will be applied. This sometimes happens when following on from previous paragraphs if styles have not been set correctly. At the top of the page, write Contents, centered and in bold. In APA Style, you can use up to five levels of heading, each with its own formatting style. In the table of contents, you should include all level 1 and 2 headings, left-aligned and formatted as plain text. Level 2 headings are indented.

Select the text that you want to convert, and then click Insert > Table > Convert Text to Table. In the Convert Text to Table box, choose the options you want. Under Table size, make sure the numbers match the numbers of columns and rows you want. In the Fixed column width box, type or select a value.

It's time to let Microsoft Word do its magic! Place the cursor where you want the table of contents to appear in the document. Navigate to the REFERENCES tab in the Ribbon. Click the Table of Contents button in the Table of Contents group. Choose one of the "Automatic" table of content styles listed.

If you've manually applied formatting to any of your titles, they might show up in the TOC. But a title in a document with a "Title" heading (or "Subtitle" heading) generally won't appear in the TOC (or outline). Instead, use only Headings 1-6 for your titles.
