It is mandatory to renew your licence after its expiry because as per the law, in India, you cannot drive any vehicle without a valid driving licence. As per Section 177 of the Motor Act, 1988, driving on public roads without a valid driving licence is a punishable offence. Violators of the same are liable to be fined.

Private Driving license is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till the holder attains 40 years of age, which comes earlier. After the age of 40 the Driving licence will be issued for 10 years & then 5 years subsequently.

The first two characters should be upper-case alphabets that represent the state code. The next two characters should be digits that represent the RTO code. The next four characters should be digits that represent the license issued in a year.

If you hold an old driving license with a different format, please convert the format as per below rule before entering. YYYY - 4-digit Year of Issue (For Example: If year is mentioned in 2 digits, say 99, then it should be converted to 1999. Similarly use 2012 for 12). Rest of the numbers are to be given in 7 digits.

NEW DELHI: There won't be any more extension for the validity of expired vehicle and driver-related documents such as driving licence (DL), registration certificate (RC), permits and fitness certificates beyond October 31, the road transport ministry has informed the transporters' organisations.

In India, driving licences are valid and effective for 20 years from the issuance date or till the license holder reaches 50 years, either of which comes earlier. For commercial vehicles, the driving licence is valid until 3 years. A driving license can be renewed before the expiry date.
