An effective date is the date on which a policy, contract, or agreement takes effect. The effective date is typically stated in the opening clause of the document. For example, if an insurance policy has an effective date of April 1, that means coverage under the policy begins on April 1.

(The United States-based convention for formatting a date places the month before the day. For example: June 11, 2001. ) Write out the month, day and year two inches from the top of the page. Depending which format you are using for your letter, either left justify the date or tab to the center point and type the date.

In America, the date is formally written in month/day/year form. Thus, ?January 1, 2011? is widely considered to be correct. In formal usage, it is not appropriate to omit the year, or to use a purely numerical form of the date.

Let's look at a couple of examples. An insurance contract might be entered into by the parties on January 1, but provide that the effective date of the insurance coverage begins on February 1. Thus, the insured's obligation to pay was created by the contract on January 1.

?Contract effective date? means the date agreed upon by the parties for beginning the period of performance under the contract. In no case shall the effective date precede the date on which the contracting officer or designated higher approval authority signs the document.

The best way to use dates in contracts is to write out the month, preceded by a figure for the day. Use four digits when referring to specific years. Never write a date ing to either of the following structures: ..the 15th day of March 1928 (written out)

The effective date is when your obligations outlined in the contract begin. In other words, contracts become enforceable on the effective date. This date cannot precede the execution date, meaning a contract cannot be in effect until after all parties sign it.

In text, write out the full name of the month, followed by the cardinal number, a comma and the year. Although we read the day as though it were an ordinal (e.g., ?March 3rd?), write the day as ?March 3.? Use the ordinal only when the day appears without the year.

In the most formal writing, such as contracts, invitations, plaques and presentation documents, it is usual to write out the entire date in words. Days and months are capitalized, but dates and years are not. . . . on this sixteenth day of June, nineteen hundred and ninety-seven . . .
