Separation seals prevent oil from entering the dry gas seal and ensure that no process gas enters the bearing cavity. They are also useful as a last resource to prevent process gas from entering the bearing cavity in the event of a catastrophic seal failure.

Dry gas seals typical operate with a three- to four-micron seal gap. This provides safety to prevent contact between seal ring faces due to any seal ring deformation.

Since dry gas seals are used mainly in compressors, they are described in API 617 Standard ? a standard for compressors. But because dry gas seals have found some use in pumps as well, they are also described in API 682 Standard, which is a standard for mechanical seals for pumps.

These seals are basically used on top entry agitators for food and pharmaceutical industries where contamination of the media with any other liquid inside the agitator is not permissible. These seals do not require any external lubrication to the seal faces, hence these seals are known as dry running seals.

Separation Seal Gas This gas is injected between the two separation seal elements, providing a barrier between the atmospheric bearing housing and the dry gas seal.

Double dry gas seal systems are much simpler that tandem seal systems and are easier to monitor if nitrogen is available at the proper pressure and will be compatible with the process. Double seals can be used for all process services that can tolerate N2 and have a seal reference pressure below 400 kPag (60 psig).

A clean and dry separation gas is continuously injected into the barrier seal to protect the migration of lube oil from the outboard bearing housing. The separation gas should be filtered to 5 microns solid particles and should be 99.98% free of the entrained liquid particles 3 microns and larger.
