The court system does not want the public to see your court papers so some courts have rules that tell you to edit out personal information before filing your papers with the court. This is called redaction.

Use scissors to cut out all text that you need to redact. Make sure you find every mention of the sensitive information in the paper document and cut it out. You should then shred the paper clippings to ensure the cut out information cannot be traced or found.

Best practices for redacting a PDF Make a copy of the original PDF. Use a different color or font for the redacted text to stand out from the rest of the document. Use a highlighter or other marking tool to identify the confidential data you want to remove. Redact the data using a PDF editing program.

Sanitize your documents. Choose Tools ? Redact. Click Sanitize Document in the top toolbar. Choose to selectively remove hidden information or remove all by clicking OK. Choose Save As? and save the file with a different name to avoid overwriting the original.

In addition to personal data identifiers, other information that should be redacted include medical records, trade secrets, informant names, and security information.

In Word, select File>Open, then open the "text-redacted" text (. txt) version. You may then reformat the text however you need and save you work as the "final-redacted" version. Be sure you do not change any text, just the formatting.
