Becoming a racing driver takes up a lot of time and requires a lot of dedication. Even if drivers are not at Formula 1 level, they will be expected to dedicate most of their time to getting there. Weekends will be taken up with competing in races, while some of the races will require extensive travel.

A minimum age of 18 at the start of their first F1 competition. An existing holder of an International Grade A competition licence. A holder of a valid driving licence. Passing of an FIA theory test on knowledge of the F1 sporting codes and regulations when applying for the first time.

Drivers and teams are charged a fee to participate in the world championship based on their results from the previous year, with a flat fee adding to a set amount per point scored. Due to the ever-increasing number of events and the introduction of sprint races there are more points on offer than ever before.

Any driver who wishes to compete in F1 needs to obtain a Super Licence. This is a qualification issued by the sport's governing body, the FIA, based on various factors (more about those in the sections below).

Specifically, each driver will pay a base fee ? in euros ? of ?10,400, plus ?2,100 per point scored during the 2022 season, for the chance to race in 2023.

The super licence fee for 2023 is ?10,400 (£9,217 / $11,178) with an extra ?2,100 (£ 1,861 / $2,257) per point achieved in the 2022 season. Verstappen scored 454 points so his total fee adds up to ?963,800 which is £854,060 or $1,036,158.
