A footnote consists of two linked parts: the footnote reference number that appears in text, and the footnote text that appears at the bottom of the column. You can create footnotes or import them from Word or RTF documents. Footnotes are automatically numbered as they are added to a document.

Choose Where To Display Footnotes in PDF Exports Click 'Appearance -> Theme Options' and select the PDF Options tab. Select the relevant option from the 'Footnotes Style' setting.

Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout your paper. Each note should have a unique number; don't use the same number again even if you cite the same source repeatedly. Footnote numbers are usually placed at the end of the relevant clause or sentence.

You can add footnotes in any order you want. Word automatically updates the numbering so that all the footnotes appear sequentially in the document.

Word automatically creates footnotes as list-based numbering. The number in the text is actually a cross-reference to the number of the footnote. Word automatically numbers the footnote paragraphs and creates the cross-reference when you insert the footnote.

In Word, footnotes can be automatically numbered from 1 through the number of footnotes in the document. Thus, if your document contains 14 footnotes, they will be numbered 1 through 14. You can change the way footnotes are numbered, however.
