Canadian censuses are transferred to Library and Archives Canada (LAC) 92 years after they are conducted. Those from 1825 to 1926 are available for research in online databases. By selecting a database, you can access more information about a particular census, as well as the link to the database itself.

The Statistics Act amended in 2005 allows for the release of historical census records from 1911 to 2001, 92 years after the census collection (meaning, for instance, that census records from 2001 will be released in 2093).

Ing to the "72-Year Rule," the National Archives releases census records to the general public 72 years after Census Day.

Individuals may request their own records (before they are publicly available) via the U.S. Census Bureau's Age Search service. This service provides individual information from censuses that are still protected by the 72-year rule, but only to the named person, his or her heirs, or legal representatives.

You can research census records online through familysearch.com website for free. Find "catalog" in the menu. Put the state in the search box. Afterwards look at the menu on the right, look for census records in the menu and select the year you want.

However, you can view censuses from 1841 to 1921 free of charge on site at The National Archives in Kew, and from 1841 to 1911 at many libraries and record offices and at FamilySearch Centres worldwide.

About the 1881 Census The 1881 Census is free to view on Findmypast.

Access to the 1921 Census online at Findmypast is free on the premises at The National Archives in Kew. You can access the Census via the on site computers, on site tablet devices or your own device (e.g. smartphone) while you are connected to the Wi-Fi in the dedicated 20sPeople zone.

There is a $65 fee for a search of one census for one person only.

Accessing the 1901 Census Use of the index is free and you get useful information back from the free search about the person, their surname and forename, year of birth, place of birth and where they were in 1901. However you will have to pay to see the full transcription or the images.
