The United Nations was established after World War II in an attempt to maintain international peace and security and to achieve cooperation among nations on economic, social, and humanitarian problems. The practice of collective security requires all nations to join one universal alliance other than two or mere balancing alliances. Unlike alliances, collective security does not recognise any traditional friendship or enmity. It rather functions with impartiality.

Several provisions govern the use of armed force. Two provisions dominate legal thought and practice. Article 2(4) prohibits the use of armed force. Article 51 permits self-defense if an armed attack occurs.

Article 51 Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.

The Charter is an international treaty which codifies the basic tenets of international relations from the sovereign equality of states to prohibition of the use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.
